At the end of the financial year we prepare your financial statements (tilinpäätös): the income statement, balance sheet and notes. You get the year-end summary required by law and the basis for your tax return.
The financial statements (tilinpäätös) summarise the accounts for the financial year. They consist of the income statement, the balance sheet and the notes, and under the Accounting Act (kirjanpitolaki) they must be prepared within four months of the end of the financial year.
When the financial statements are prepared, accruals (income and expenses are booked to the financial year they belong to), depreciation (the cost of machinery and other long-term purchases is spread over several years) and other year-end entries are made so that the result and the company's assets are shown correctly. The tax return (veroilmoitus) is prepared on the basis of the financial statements, and in a limited company (osakeyhtiö, Oy) any dividend distribution is decided on.
A limited company's financial statements are adopted at the general meeting and filed for registration in the Trade Register (kaupparekisteri). The financial statements are kept as part of the accounting records.

When do the financial statements have to be ready?
Under the Accounting Act, the financial statements must be prepared within four months of the end of the financial year. We start work as soon as the year's records are complete.
Can you prepare the financial statements if the bookkeeping was done elsewhere?
Yes, once we have access to the accounting records. We first check whether the accounts are in good enough shape for the financial statements to be prepared.
